nkd ( ) waxing, the award-winning waxing and specialist beauty salon which is located on Pelham Street in the city centre, is celebrating the fact it is about to embark on its tenth year of trading with fizz, fun and free waxing on offer.
Originally located in a small start-up unit on Bridlesmith Walk, nkd first opened its doors to the Nottingham public in early December 2009. Since then, the business has grown significantly and now comprises two three-storey locations – both of which have been named as the best in the business – and an industry training school, as well as employing 15 staff.
“I feel incredibly proud to have reached this point,” Rebecca says, reflecting on her business journey over the last decade. “Every day, I seem to read about the latest city centre casualty, in terms of which Nottingham business has just closed its doors for the last time. You don’t have to walk around Nottingham for long to see how tough trading conditions are – I’m constantly surprised by the number of vacant shopfronts that currently exist.”
Dowdeswell puts the fact that nkd has not only survived, but has thrived to the point of being able to open a second branch of nkd in Leicester city centre, as well as continuing to grow its original Nottingham salon and team, primarily down to business strategy. “We have never waivered from our original vision of focussing steadfastly on the two very specific areas of waxing and lashes & brows, as opposed to being a generalist beauty salon which could be considered a jack of all trades but a master of none,” Rebecca says. “After nine years of business, our customers are now in no doubt that their nkd wax will be quicker, more comfortable and give better, longer-lasting results than a wax from a generalist beauty salon which do not typically employ experts. Likewise with their lash & brow treatments. That’s why we have such a large and loyal customerbase and why our clients are so ready to recommend us to their friends and family, which enables us to keep on growing.”
nkd is also receiving recognition from the wider community. nkd ( ) Leicester was recently named as the Best Small Beauty Salon in the Midlands at the prestigious Professional Beauty 2018 Regional Awards. nkd ( ) Nottingham was named Best Large Salon in the Midlands at the same awards in 2016. Furthermore, the company has also been shortlisted in the coveted “Employer of the Year” category for the third year running in the Professional Beauty National Awards 2019 and will find out whether it has won in February 2019.
So what next for this flourishing business? “We’re going to expand our Lash & Brow offering in 2019,” Rebecca explains. “We’ve proven our expertise in waxing, but we’re not yet as well known for our expert lash & brow treatments, which we want to be.” A new Head of Lashes & Brows has been appointed to help the company reach this aim. “Rebecca says she also wants to go for Investors in People in 2019, which she hopes may help the company attract more of the best beauty professionals, which she believes is necessary to take nkd to the next level of growth.
