A primary school in Spalding has received national recognition for its inspiring approach to helping children eat well and stay active.
St John the Baptist Primary School has been named winner of the Food for Fitness Award in the Jamie Oliver Good School Food Awards. The honour celebrates schools that go above and beyond to make healthy food and physical activity a daily, joyful part of school life.
At St John’s, pupils grow vegetables in the school allotment and use them in cooking lessons. The school also runs daily open-ended play sessions, yoga breaks in classrooms, and forest school activities to support physical and mental wellbeing.
The surprise award was presented at a special assembly by Fire from BBC’s Gladiators, with pupils reading out personal nominations explaining why they believed their school deserved national recognition.
Montell Douglas (Fire) said: “What really stood out to me was how the school has made wellbeing part of the whole culture—not just in PE lessons, but in the playground, the classroom, even the kitchen. It’s about giving kids the tools to feel strong in their minds and bodies, and that’s so powerful.”
Zack George added: “This isn’t just about getting active—it’s about building confidence, resilience, and healthy habits for life. What’s happening here is next level. Proper Gladiator energy.”
Jamie Oliver said: “Clare and her team have shown how joyful food and movement can be when they’re part of everyday school life. It’s not about ticking boxes—it’s about making kids feel amazing. That’s what this award celebrates.”
