Chuter Ede Primary School in Fernwood has received a £500 donation from David Wilson Homes to support its efforts in improving its outdoor grounds.

The school, located close to the housebuilder’s Fernwood Village development, will be using the donation to purchase items such as pond plants, outdoor instruments, chalkboards and a sand pit to enhance the pupils’ outdoor learning.

Rachel Revill, Head of School at Chuter Ede Primary School’s Fernwood site, said: “We are so grateful to David Wilson Homes for their donation to our school and it has allowed us to make plans to make the outdoor areas as best as they can be.

“We encourage our pupils to explore the outdoors and learn about nature, particularly during Coronavirus restrictions where we have spent a lot of time outside, and we hope this interest will long continue with our purchased outdoor items.”

Research following primary school pupils engaging in outdoor learning as part of Outdoor Classroom Day found that 88% of teachers said that children are happier after playing outdoors, whilst 88% also said that children are more engaged in learning when taking lessons outdoors. Additionally, 97% of teachers said that outdoor play is critical for children to reach their full potential.

David Wilson Homes has previously partnered with the school with donations to the pupils such as high-vis vests for Walk to School Month.

John Reddington, Managing Director at David Wilson Homes East Midlands, said: “We’re thrilled to support Chuter Ede Primary School with a donation in making the outdoor grounds a great place for its pupils to spend time in and continue their outdoor education.

“We’re proud to support communities in the locations we build and, with Chuter Ede Primary School situated adjacent to our Fernwood Village development, it is important that we can help out in any way that we can.”
